Sudden Unexplained Death in Children (“SUDC”) is the name given to a sudden and unexplained death of a child over the age of one. It is a diagnosis of exclusion. No reason can be found for the child’s death. Its incidence is rarer than Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (“SIDS”) but, like SIDS, the tragedy is devastating and unexplained.
The SUDC program, founded by two mothers both of whom lost a child for unexplained reasons, was created in September 2001 as part of the CJ Foundation for SIDS in Hackensack, New Jersey. Its main objectives include supporting grief-stricken families and promoting public awareness of SUDC.
The SUDC program also funds research in an effort to understand SUDC and its possible causes. Unfortunately, the research has been extremely limited. The SUDC program provides the main source of funds for research.
So little about SUDC is known in the medical community and so little has been written about SUDC. Research is absolutely essential if ever this tragedy is to be avoided in the future. SUDC devastates enough families that more needs to be done.
Please consider donating directly to the SUDC program or to Levi's Memorial Fund.
